Printable sign guide
How to make a business sign customers can read quickly.
A good printable sign does not try to do too much. It tells the customer what changed, what to do next, and where to look for details. This is true for door signs, counter signs, pickup signs, Wi-Fi signs, hiring signs, sale notices, out-of-order signs, and temporary restaurant menus.
Start with one main message
The largest line should be short enough to understand in a glance: "Closed Today," "Business Hours," "Pickup Here," "Now Hiring," "Guest Wi-Fi," or "Out of Order." Customers often read signs while walking, waiting in line, or looking through glass. If the main line needs more than a few words, split the details into a smaller supporting line.
Choose the right sign format
- Use portrait layout for doors, front windows, waiting rooms, and policy notices.
- Use landscape layout for counters, table tents, menu boards, and wide glass panels.
- Use US Letter in the United States and A4 where office printers usually use A4 paper.
- Use a QR sign when the action is easier on a phone, such as reviews, Wi-Fi, forms, or menus.
Keep contrast high
Black or dark text on a light page works in most storefronts. If the sign sits behind glass, avoid pale gray text and low-contrast color combinations. Bright accent colors are useful for urgent notices and sale signs, but the words still need to be readable when the sign is seen from a few steps away.
Make dates and times impossible to miss
For hours, holiday closures, pop-up dinners, limited sales, and return times, put the date or time in the largest detail area. Remove outdated signs quickly. Old holiday hours or expired sale signs make a business look unattended, even when the rest of the storefront is polished.
Test before posting
Print one copy, step back, and read it like a customer. If the main instruction is not obvious, shorten the headline or increase contrast. For QR signs, scan the code with a phone before posting it. For outdoor doors, use a sleeve or laminate the page so weather does not make the sign look neglected.
